Torquay Library Free Community Breakfasts

Torquay Library is a welcoming, warm space, and as part of the offering this winter and until April 2025, we will be offering free breakfast every Tuesday from 9:30-11 am. Staff will be on hand to help, but anyone can come along and serve themselves.

The feasts may vary each week, but there’s always a broad selection of everyone’s favourite cereals – Weetabix, Cornflakes, Shreddies plus porridge, fruit, pastries, cereal bars and bread & jam. Vegans are well-catered for, too.

The team will also be able to signpost you to information and have plenty of books with ideas for budgeting and eating healthily.

Tea, coffee and juice are also available; if you just fancy a cuppa and a chat, this will be ideal for you. We sometimes invite guests to the breakfasts from groups such as Action for Children and ECOE, who are there if anyone needs any advice/support. The library has a folder on display of key local services and contacts, it’s fill of local tips as to where to get free food, coffees, showers etc. So far, we have served 305 people at the breakfasts, and we have dozens of positive feedback and reviews. Everyone agrees that this is a great way to start the day!

Torquay Library has other supporting services to help the public through the cost of living crisis, including a warm coat rail (just take any coat without asking), free school uniform, free blood pressure monitor hire, free costume hire, free games hire, a free Stay and Play every day including ball pits, sandcastle making, and toys – ever-changing activities. And, of course, it’s free to join the library (no ID needed), it’s free to borrow books and eBooks, and it’s free to sit and enjoy space, and people do.

Recently, a customer was locked out of his house, so he spent all day in the warmth of Torquay Library. There are some lovely spaces in this Art Deco library, including the new Teen/ Young Adult book Tok furnished with fur-covered chairs, blankets and fairy lights, and the glorious local history room and the Agatha Christie balcony.

Come and see for yourself – Libraries are changing. They are vibrant and free community spaces.
