Support Your Local Library: A Hub for Learning, Connection & Community

We’re lucky to have such a welcoming and active library here in Torquay, and with May Half-Term just around the corner, there are some brilliant free and low-cost events planned for families, children, and the wider community.

You can view some upcoming Half-Term activities on the poster below.

But beyond just attending events, here’s why showing up and using your library really matters right now.

Torbay Libraries are currently managed by the charity Libraries Unlimited, under contract from Torbay Council for the next three years. While this might sound stable, discussions about merging services and possible library closures are happening across the UK.

Sarah from Torquay Library is calling residents to action:

Let’s gather strong data and meaningful impact stories over the next few years to show just how valuable this local library truly is.

Every month, the leadership team at Libraries Unlimited presents a report to the Commissioner for Torbay Libraries. Their Data Manager shares key performance indicators, including:

  • Number of books issued
  • Number of eBooks downloaded
  • Footfall to the library
  • Number of active members (so people who borrowed a book, eBook or used a computer in the last 6 months)
  • The number of computer sessions started
  • Number of volunteers and hours given to volunteering
  • Number of events and attendance
  • New members

In addition to the data, the team collects impact stories and customer feedback, something any library user can contribute to.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Make sure you’re a library member
  • Borrow a book at least once a year to remain an active member
  • Borrow more books, even just for a quick read while visiting
  • Encourage your family and friends to join. Membership is open to everyone
  • Pop in when you’re passing, if possible, go inside rather than using the drop bin
  • Attend events and spread the word

Support the library in other ways:

  • Donate books
  • Offer financial support
  • Volunteer even just two hours a week makes a huge difference

Many of us love libraries but get too busy to use them regularly. Yet they have a real impact every day they open, particularly for those who are vulnerable or experiencing financial hardship.

People appreciate not just the space but also the chance to speak with friendly, supportive staff, often during difficult moments. These meaningful interactions aren’t reflected in the statistics, but they matter.

๐Ÿ’› Please support your local library. Use it. Talk about it. Help us protect it.
