Smoking Cessation Meeting 2 Overview: Mindset Techniques.

On Monday, 20th January, we had the pleasure of welcoming Charlotte King from the Pebble Ridge Practice, Torquay, to our second smoking cessation meeting.

Charlotte is a multi-award-winning therapist, supervisor, and lecturer with extensive experience in Solution-Focused Therapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy, and Trauma Rewind techniques. Her expertise lies in helping individuals shift their mindset and create positive changes in their lives.

During her hour-long session, Charlotte guided us through mindset exercises designed to help us rethink our relationship with smoking.

Charlotte made an insightful point about how the mind reacts to restrictions: when we tell ourselves “no more smoking,” it’s natural to want a cigarette because we feel deprived. Instead, she encouraged us to observe the language we use with ourselves, pause, weigh our options, and then make a conscious choice. By doing this, we might start to shift our habits and mindset over time.

A key takeaway was the idea that quitting smoking is like preparing for a marathon; it’s a journey that takes time, energy, and patience. There will be good days and setbacks, but being kind to ourselves and focusing on progress rather than setbacks can make all the difference.

As a smoker myself, I often feel like I’ve failed when I give in to a craving, which can lead to a feeling of just giving up! Charlotte’s session helped me reframe this: instead of berating myself, I can recognise progress, like reducing from four cigarettes in the morning to just one. That’s still a win!

Another takeaway was the importance of reconnecting with the reasons why we want to quit.

How will it make us feel? How will it improve our lives? Keeping this in mind during cravings can help build the resilience needed to stay aligned with our goals.
